Wedding Invitation Pop Up Card: Linked Rings Tutorial

Wedding Invitation Pop Up Card: Linked Rings Tutorial

In this tutorial, I will show you how to make a wedding pop up card or wedding invitation pop up card.  The wedding pop up card template is also provided below.  This card is a simple wedding card you can make to give to a wedding couple or make as a wedding couple to give out as invitations. This is the Linked Rings design:

These instructions will allow you to make either a basic wedding card version, or the wedding invitation version. Here is a video of the tutorial:

Here is the transcript of the video.  Detailed instructions are listed below:

  1. Purchase the template for this design here: Wedding Pop Up Card Linked Rings Template.
  2. Print out the template.
  3. Highlight where you will want to score or fold the card for reference.
  4. Cut out the inside card. To make the card more personal or customized, you can add the wedding couple's names or initials in the rings.
  5. Assemble the rings by folding the rings upwards. Feed the ring without the diamond through the ring with the diamond.
  6. Match the two slots on the rings together. The slots keep the rings centered Here is what the slots look like before and after assembly:
  7. Now that it's assembled, fold the card in half making sure it folds flat.
  8. Use a piece of tape to secure loose leg of the ring (without a diamond). You may also choose to glue this to the backing after you assemble the entire card together.
  9. Cut out the backing from the template. I've included a complex and a simple version. The simple version has a lower number of facets in the corner diamonds. If you want to use a ribbon, then cut out the 2 slits on the sides. The ribbon I made the slits for is 5/8th inch wide. If you want to use a larger ribbon, then make the slits longer.
  10. If you are going to use ribbon, then feed the ribbon through the card and tie a bow on the outside.
  11. To assemble the card, simply slip the inside of the card into the corner diamond cutouts. If you want to glue the inside card to the backing, then only glue the top half. This will still allow the inside card to shift when you fold the card. If you glue both halves, then the card will not fold flat.
  12. For the invitation version cut out the 2 small boxes from the template. This will be the frame for your wording.
  13. Then, print out your wording in 2 sections that are 1 ¾ ” by 1 ½ “. Printed the words out in different sizes so you can find the right size to fit the frame correctly. In one box write the intro, such as, “We request the pleasure of your company at the celebration of our union.” In the second box, print the location.
  14. Glue the words and frames into the card alongside the silhouette of the rings. This is an easy way to add wording to your card without having to print directly on the cardstock of the card.
  15. Then glue in the date on the ribbon and the time in the bottom silhouette of the ring. You may chose to put other items in the silhouette of the rings. The card is now finished

If you are making this card by hand, and not with a cutting machine, then you may want to simplify the design by not cutting the facets of the diamond or other intricate details.

You can buy a  Silhouette Cameo Cutting Tool from Scrapbook.com if you want to get additional scrapbooking supplies.  Or buy your Silhouette Cameo from Amazon and get other items as well.

Hi Rich, you said ‘if you are making this with a cutting machine’ – is there one availble for this wedding card? i would like to make it as an invites but afraid it’ll take me all year to hand cut 100 of them! Thanks

I am using a cutting machine. I would suggest buying one. I use a Klic-N-Kut. They are really expensive now. I’m thinking about getting another cheaper one that i can recommend to people. I hear good things about the craftrobo, which is still a few hundred dollars. But i think you can justify one if you are making enough wedding invitations.

You should be able to trace the .pdf template with KNK studio Element. Use the trace tool. If you still have problems, let me know.

I use the Klic-N-Kut Element. For this design, you may be able to cut it out by hand, although the diamond is a bit tedious.

Hi Charitha, Unfortunately i dont sell wedding cards. If you have the stamina, you can make the card yourself. I made 100 invitations myself, but i bought a cutting machine to help. Making your own invitations will pay for the machine, and the invitations will feel more custom and meaningful. Good luck!

The quality of the cut depends greatly on the sharpness of the blade and quality of mat. You may want to try a new blade. I also use a thinner card stock (65lb). You may also try to reduce your cutting speed.

Thank you for making your creations available to the public. They are extraordinary!

I was wondering if you would consider making them available in a cutting file format. I can open WPC and SVG. I would like to add names to the rings like you have done. Thank you.

I currently dont have a way to convert my files to SVG. I’m sure there is a converter somewhere. I’ll let you know if i figure it out.

Thank you for sharing your patterns and tutorials. I have enjoyed making many of your cards. My family & friends always look forward to their cards. I am looking for a church template and have been unable to find one. Any suggestions? BTW, did you make a video of an airplane popup? I watched that over and over until I was able to make one myself. My grandson loved it. Thanks again for sharing your creativity.

    • Creative

I don’t have a template for adding a name. You can try to cut the names out inside the rings. First, print the template out and sketch the names on the template.

Congratulations on your wedding! Look for 65lb paper. That’s a good thickness that’s not too thick and not too thin. If you use a cutting machine, you’ll be able to make more cards before your blade dulls. Good luck!

I love this tutorial and would like to try and make these for my upcming wedding in May. I was going to buy the Silhouette SD to make these.. If I buy that machine and the right size card stock, is it pretty simple to begin? I would be really intersted in you doing a tutorial where you show how the first part is when using your software and machine for us beginners. How talented you are! Thanks for sharing!!

Hi Bella! There are people who have used the Silhouette to make my cards. There should be a tracing function in the Silhouette software that will let you trace the .pdf. I will probably get the Silhouette Cameo in a few weeks.

    Hi rich,

I bought the machine and I made one card as a test when I used 80lb papers the cutting is not clean, it cuts only from one side. Do you know where can I purchase papers with 65lb !! I could not find.

Plus, do you know what speed should I use and the blade setting !!?

Thanks and I am sorry by asking these silly questions I am so excited to do it and I can not make it look clean and fabulous as yours

You can buy 65lb paper at Michael’s or an office supply store. You may want to increase your pressure by changing the Thickness setting to 30. I hope this worked!

Hi Sandy, unfortunately, Cricut deliberately does not allow people to use cutting files that they do not sell. The only way that I know how to use my cutting files with Cricut is if you have an old copy of Sure Cuts A lot or Make The Cut software, when they used to support Cricut. Their newer versions were forced to not support Cricut. Sorry!

Hi, I just ordered the template. How do I put the name inside the rings? The template I received only has uppercase letters.

    • CreativeRich
Posted at 10:36h, 11 October Reply

Hi Lyn! To put a name, you’ll have to cut out the names separately and then glue them into the rings. I would suggest using any word processing software to write the name out, then enlarge it, and pint it out. You can use that print out for the template to cut out, but make sure it fits the rings first.

I’m a little confused with the templates. I want it to put two names, like the video showed but the video doesn’t explain how the names got there. How exactly do I put names there instead of it saying congratulations?

Posted at 11:35h, 29 August Reply

Hi Jenna, Thanks for watching my videos. The template will have dotted lines where you will need to fold the card. And yes, the easiest way is to cut the names out separately then glue them into the card. Thanks!
