Rose Flower Pop Up Card Tutorial

Rose Flower Pop Up Card Tutorial

This tutorial will show you how to make the rose pop up card.  This is a great craft idea to make for a Valentine's day card or Mother's day card.  This rose pop up card turned out better than I had hoped.  The rose petals on the outside are separate and overlap each other, which gives it a spiral look, making the rose look very realistic.  This card will surely impress my mom, and your mom if you make this.  This could also make a great Valentine's day card or a birthday card for that special someone.  If you were an ambitious bride, you could also make this card as a wedding invitation, or simple to give to a lucky wedding couple as a wedding card.

This card is relatively easy to assemble.  It does not require any sewing.  It can be made with minimal glue or tape.  I would recommend using a cutting machine to cut all the parts out. This will ensure that all the parts fit together perfectly.

I actually think that the card looks better in person that it does in pictures.  Here is what the card looks like:

I would suggest watching my tutorial video for this card.  The instructions are much easier to understand visually than written.  Here is a video on how to make this card:

Here are written instructions on how to make this card:

1.  First, purchase the template for this card here: rose pop up card.
2.  Print out the template and cut out all of the parts.  Or use the cutting files to cut out the parts using a cutting machine like the Silhouette Cameo.
3.  Arrange all of the petals (except for the “C” petals) in a row from left to right.  The slots should be at the bottom left and upper right.
4.  Assemble the petals so that the tabs at the bottom are opposite each other (I would recommend watching the video for this).
5.  Using a round pen, curl the edges of the flowers outwards to give the petals a more natural look.
6.  Assemble the “D” petals through the rose bottom and inside card by inserting the tabs into the slots closest to the center fold.  Work your way outwards by assembling the “B” petals, “C” petals and finally the “A” petals. The rose bottom is used to maintain the same color inside your flower. (I made another pink rose to show the assembly steps)

“D” Petals assembled

“C” Petals positioned

“A” Petals positioned

7. Every time you insert the tab through the slot, tape or glue the tab down to the back of the inside card. Make sure your card folds flat after assembling each set of petals.

Backside taped

8. Insert the inside card into the outside card at the corners.

I hope some of you will have a chance to make this for your mom this Mother's day or for that special person on Valentine's Day.  I'd love to hear how they liked it.

What size paper used for the flower and can you use crepe paper?

Hi Dee! You should use standard 8.5×11″ card stock. You should use 65lb card stock instead of crepe paper. Crepe paper will be too soft and it will be difficult to assemble.

I’d really like to buy and try this template but I don’t have the cutting machine and might have to save for one in the future.. not sure if I could pull it off without the petals unraveling if I cut the notches “too loose” (with scissors or precision knife) where you insert and overlap petals. I’m new at this and by new I mean no background whatsoever with craft/model building. What a shame since of all the rose pop-up card images I saw on google, this one is the most realistic and “clean” of them all. What do you use to score the cardstock to make folding easier?

    • Creative Rich
Posted at 21:10h, 08 May Reply

Hi Jeremy! You can try cutting out the template using the methods here: Using Templates. I usually score with an X-acto knife, cutting very softly partially through the paper. Make sure you score on the “mountain” side of the fold.

Quick question, how do I get the password for the Secret Subscriber Mother’s Day Sale? Is there a special requirement? I tried my account password but it didn’t work.

G’day again from the land downunder Rich! No matter how many times I see your designs and then make them, I am always left gob smacked! You are truly brilliant. I do have a question though, when I convert the PDF file to JPEG and then open it in my silhouette, the image is not very clear. it seems the lines have breaks in them instead of nice clearly defined lines, do you have an idea of what it is I am doing wrong? Thanks again for sharing your talent at a reasonable price. Hope your little one is growing strong 🙂

Hi Allison, Have you tried to use the .studio files that I have included? those should work with your Silhouette. You may also want to try using the .svg files if you have MTC or SCAL. The lines are made of several arcs so there may be tiny discontinuities within the lines, but they should be very small. I usually weed using an X-acto knife to break the small attachments.

Hi Steve! Most of my cards use Monotype Corsiva. I also used Vivaldi Italic and Cooper Black (italic) for one of the “I -heart- You”‘s. Unfortunately, I don’t remember the others.
